This must be one of the most unique projects I've ever been a part of. A few years ago, our office (then BURO Architects) was asked to assist with the site planning and documentation of the throne for the Peace Centre in Bhutan. The project, located in Thimpu, houses a lecture theatre, meditation room, conference centre and library. All of this is topped with a 60metre high bronze statue of a Buddha.
It wasn't until this image popped into my inbox last week, showing it close to completion, that I really got a sense of the magnitude and intensity of this project. I knew it was going to be big and dramatic, but gee-wizz, it looks so majestic in that landscape!
Paul von Chrismar, a Buddhist himself, lead the team in our office (now Director of Buro). He met with His Eminence, in Bhutan every few months to discuss the project.
To be honest, I probably only worked on it for a couple of days, but it's exciting to know I played a small part in this very exciting (and surreal) project. For more information, click here.
