Will slick window detailing in restored buildings ever get old for me? The tension between the two get me every time. This time around we're looking at The Design Republic Commune in Shanghai, a mixed use design centre housing predominantly retail spaces. Originally built in the 1910s as a police headquarters, the brickwork that remains is a glorious festival of texture. The newly added walls sit politely within the space, whilst sporting some extremely hot window porn. The slenderness of the frames, oh how I love thee.
The facade has been freshly clad but the original brickwork peers out from underneath, hinting at the architectural story inside. What a tease.
